This authentic red sangria recipe is my own version of two different sangria recipes: Sangria Natural and Sangria Traditional. Made with my favorite sweet red wine, a splash of orange juice, and my homemade simple syrup, this red wine sangria is the perfect drink to serve to some friends during a get-together or a meal.

This red sangria recipe is one of the few drinks I remember my father preparing at home. He would make it only on Christmas Eve or New Years’ Eve, and he made the Natural Sangria using grenadine syrup instead of white syrup.

We call the version of Sangria we make in Mexico “Sangría Natural”. It’s made using:

  • Red wine
  • Lime juice
  • Sugar
  • Mineral water

The classic Sangria from Spain is called"Sangría Tradicional" and is made with:

  • Orange juice
  • Fruit
  • Sugar
  • Cointreau or rum
  • Peaches
  • Apples

The Sangria recipe that I make at home is somewhat of a mix between the two versions I originally mentioned, since it uses mineral water (like the Natural version) but also uses orange juice (like the Traditional Sangria).

This is the way my dad used to prepare this drink during the holidays. I use red wine and prepare the natural syrup at home (the recipe for the syrup will be included below).

Frequently Asked Questions About Red Sangria

Before I share my sangria recipe, here are a few questions I've been asked about my version of red sangria.

Which is the best wine for sangria?

One of the best wines to use for this sangria recipe are the ones made with the Garnacha grapes or the Tempranillo grapes.

If you have a favorite red wine, use that one. If you prefer fruity wines, like I do because they are lower in tannins, go ahead and use those. The best part about these wines? They tend to be less expensive!

For this drink, you can easily find a good wine for under $20 dollars. No need to go buy the expensive bottles, unless you want to.

I don't like red wine. Can I use white wine instead?

If you don’t like red wine, you can also prepare a batch of white sangría using a fruity white wine.

Can I make this sangria recipe non-alcoholic?

For those of you that don’t drink, a non-alcoholic sangria can be made using grape juice or cranberry juice instead of wine.

  • To make the syrup, heat a small saucepan over low heat.

  • Add 1 tablespoon of syrup and ½ tablespoon of lime juice to each glass.

Enjoy your delicious co*cktail!

co*cktail Notes:

  • You can add more ice or syrup to your Sangria co*cktail according to your taste.
  • You can also prepare this red wine sangria in a pitcher, instead of preparing the glasses individually (I also sometimes make a single glass of sangria just for myself). Just add the ingredients in the same order in order to create the layered effect.
