Can you eat ice cream on a paleo diet?

You can’t eat conventional ice cream on a paleo diet as it contains milk and sugar that are not permitted on this diet.

However, this doesn’t mean you can’t eat ice cream if you are on a paleo diet. Many brands now make paleo-friendly ice cream. But don’t worry if you can’t find them in your nearby stores. You can easily make paleo ice cream at home even if you don’t have an ice cream maker.

  • No churn recipe. You don’t need any special equipment to make this ice cream.
  • Easy to customize. You can switch up the sweeteners, add mix-ins or change up the flavors.

Ingredients needed

As we’ve already told you, you only need four ingredients to make this creamy coconut milk-based ice cream.

  • Coconut milk.Use canned coconut milk and make sure you chill it before you start making the ice cream. You can use coconut cream if you like.
  • Chocolate protein powder. To give the ice cream chocolate flavor and enhance its protein content.
  • Cocoa powder. To make the chocolate flavor of the ice cream more prominent.

Flavor variations

You can add various ingredients to this ice cream to enhance its flavor and texture. Here are a few ideas.

  • Cinnamon
  • Chopped nuts
  • Coconut flakes
  • Dark chocolate chips
  • Paleo-friendly crushed cereal
  • Fruits chunks
  • Paleo cookies

Tips to make the best recipe

  • Chill ingredients. Chill your coconut milk before adding it to the blender. It will help achieve a smoother texture.
  • Use full fat coconut milk. Avoid low fat or carton coconut milk as they do not have the texture to create a rich and creamy ice cream.
  • Use a liquid sweetener. If you don’t want to use coconut sugar, try a paleo friendly sweetener like honey or maple syrup.
  • Thaw before serving. Let your ice cream sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before scopping.

Storage instructions

Freeze this ice cream in an airtight container. Consume it within 2 to 3 days.

The ice cream may be too frozen when you first remove it from the freezer. Allow it to sit at room temperature for a few minutes until it softens.

FAQs

Can you have ice cream on a paleo diet? ›

The paleo diet discourages the consumption of certain foods, including: Sugar and high-fructose corn syrup: soft drinks, fruit juices, table sugar, candy, pastries, ice cream, and many others. Grains: bread, pasta, wheat, cereal, spelt, rye, barley, etc.

What ingredient makes ice cream thick? ›

Egg Yolks: The most traditional thickening agent, egg yolks contain natural proteins and fats that contribute to a rich and luxurious texture in custard-based ice creams. Cornstarch: Often used in non-custard ice creams, cornstarch mixed with milk helps thicken the base and create a smooth mouthfeel.

How do you make thick milk for ice cream? ›

Add extra egg yolks for a richer, thicker texture.

This may seem like a lot, but it really makes a difference. Egg yolks not only help make the ice cream thicker, but they also help reduce the amount of ice crystals that often form during freezing.

What is keto ice cream made of? ›

Be sure to use full-fat canned coconut milk, not lite or coconutmilk beverage. If desired, you can use the seeds from a vanilla bean instead of the extract. To make the keto ice cream: Stir together the milk, sweetener, salt, and vanilla extract.

Is any cheese allowed on paleo? ›

A Paleo-diet purist will tell you no, all cheese should be avoided on a Paleo lifestyle. Paleolithic humans didn't milk cows or process dairy. This is one case in which keto diet rules are much more lax than paleo.

What makes the creamiest ice cream? ›

As you churn ice cream, individual water molecules turn into ice-crystal seeds — which is what makes cream freeze. The higher the fat content, the more time you have to churn before these ice crystals congregate, resulting in creamier final texture.

What is the secret ingredient to ice cream? ›

The cream cheese helps create an ice cream with a denser, smoother texture. As explained by TASTE, cream cheese acts as a stabilizer in ice cream, preventing water from seeping out of the milk and cream as well as preventing the formation of ice crystals that detract from ice cream's creaminess.

Why does my homemade ice cream freeze so hard? ›

the amount and/or type of sugar used in the recipe. From what I've experienced and also understand from others involved in ice cream making, concentrated sugar depresses the freezing point of ice cream, so too little an amount of sugar in the recipe makes it too hard and too much makes it too soft.

Which milk is best for making ice cream? ›

Serve and enjoy your delicious homemade vanilla bean ice cream! You can certainly experiment with different types of milk, such as heavy cream, half-and-half, or a combination of milk and cream, but in my experience, whole milk produces the best results.

Why do you put condensed milk in ice cream? ›

Sweetened condensed milk

The other job it does is absorb some of the liquids in the mix and boosts the ratio of non-fat solids in the ice cream due to it's high proportion of milk solids. This prevents the risk of large ice crystals forming and making sure the end result is silky smooth and buttery.

What is the best thickening agent for ice cream? ›

Xanthan gum works as a thickening agent in the liquid base of ice cream and stabilizes the emulsion of fat particles in the water. Xanthan gum can be found in foods, personal care products, and industrial products.

Can I have a banana on keto? ›

Bananas. Bananas may be great for muscle recovery, reducing bloat, and calming an upset stomach, but they're on the list of foods you can't eat on the keto diet. With 25g of carbs per 100g serving, bananas are too high in carbs.

Why does keto ice cream not melt? ›

Ever notice that keto ice cream tends to be a bit harder than regular ice cream? The difference is sugar: Sugar causes ice cream to melt more quickly, so ice cream that's lower in sugar takes longer to melt.

What dairy products are paleo-friendly? ›

Many people on a paleo diet today also include some sources of full-fat dairy, such as butter, cream, yogurt or whole milk. It's ideal if the dairy you eat or drink is from grass-fed cows. People who have dairy allergies or sensitivities don't need to include it in their diet.

Is any dairy allowed on paleo? ›

The typical paleo diet focuses on naturally raised meat and fish, as well as vegetables and fruits. It promotes avoiding dairy products and grains. This diet can put you at risk for deficiencies in calcium and vitamin D, which are critical to bone health.

What Cannot be eaten on the paleo diet? ›

The diet excludes cereal grains, legumes, dairy, processed oils, refined sugar, alcohol, caffeine, artificial sweeteners, and trans fats. Some paleo-friendly foods include lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.
