How To Send a Link by Email | UniOne (2024)

If you ever need to direct your friend, family member, or acquaintance to a network resource, emailing a hyperlink is the ideal way. Fortunately, all email clients let you include hyperlinks in your emails.

How to copy a URL

The process starts with copying the link from the source. In most web browsers, you can copy a link by right-clicking or tapping and holding it, then selecting the copy option. Alternatively, you can select the link and press Ctrl + C (Windows) or Command + C (macOS) on your keyboard.

How to email a web page link

After copying a link, you can paste it directly into your email client or attach it as a hyperlink address to any display text.

Let’s take UniOne’s main blog page URL https://unione.io/en/ as an example. We can paste it directly into an email, as shown below.

Alternatively, as seen below, we can create a hyperlink with any display text we choose.

Either option leads to the same page, but the second one looks more professional.

Steps to add a hyperlink

Different email clients have different procedures for adding hyperlinks. Below, we’ll outline the steps for the three most popular email clients: Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Outlook.

Adding a Gmail hyperlink

1. Open https://mail.google.com in your web browser and log into your inbox.

2. Click the Compose button to open a new message window. If you want to insert the link in an email reply instead of a new message, open the email you want to respond to and click the reply button (arrow pointing left).

3. Create your email message. Enter the recipient's email address, subject line, and body if it's a new message. If it's a reply, type the message body in the provided area.

4. Select the Hyperlink text, i.e., the word or phrase to which you want to add the hyperlink. Click and drag your cursor over the word or phrase to highlight it.

5. Click the Insert link icon, which is the chain icon at the bottom of the message window. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + K (Windows) or Command + K (Mac) to perform the same function, i.e., open the link window.

6. Paste the link in the Web address field and click OK.

7. Kudos! The hyperlink has been successfully inserted into the email. You can then change or remove the hyperlink at will.

Adding a Yahoo Mail hyperlink

1. Open https://mail.yahoo.com/ in your web browser and log into your email account.

2. Click the Compose button at the upper-left corner to open a new message window. If it’s an existing message you want to reply to, open the message and click the Reply button (the arrow pointing left).

3. Type the message content. If it's a new email, enter the recipient's email address, subject line, and body. If it's a reply, type the text into the message box.

4. Select/highlight the text to which you want to add the hyperlink– click and drag your cursor across the word or phrase.

5. Click the three horizontal dots (...) at the bottom of the message window, then click the Link icon. Pressing Ctrl + K (Windows) or Command + K (Mac) also performs the same function.

6. Paste the link in the popup window and click Save.

7. Congrats! You have added the hyperlink to the highlighted text. When you place your cursor on the hyperlink, Yahoo Mail displays a preview of the web page so that you can confirm it’s the correct one.

Adding an Outlook.com hyperlink

As you can see, the process is very much the same in all email clients.

1. Open https://www.outlook.com/ in your web browser and sign into your inbox.

2. Click the New message button in the upper-left corner to open a new message window. If you want to respond to an existing message, open the message and click the Reply button at the bottom.

3. Enter the message contents, including the receiving address, subject line, and body.

4. Highlight the text to which you want to add the hyperlink: click and drag your cursor across the word or phrase.

5. Click the three horizontal dots (...) in the formatting icon bar.

6. Click the chain link icon in the menu that pops up after clicking the three horizontal dots—this icon resembles two overlapping circles. Pressing Ctrl + K (Windows) or Command + K (Mac) after highlighting the text also performs the same function.

7. Paste the link in the web address (URL) field and click OK.

8. Congrats! You have added the hyperlink to your email. When the recipient gets the email, they can click the link to open the website.

How to add a hyperlink in Gmail on an iPhone or Android phone

We've explained how to send a web page link in an email on different desktop clients, including Gmail. But, the process for adding a hyperlink on the Gmail mobile app differs from that of the web client.

These are the steps to add a hyperlink in Gmail on the iOS or Android app:

1. Open the Gmail app on your phone and click the Compose button to open a new message window.

2. Paste the URL directly into the message (the Gmail mobile app doesn’t support typical hyperlinking on the highlighted text). You'll notice that the link isn't live, but don't fret.

3. Save the message as a draft by clicking the cancel (X) button or closing the Gmail app altogether. If you close the app, open it again.

4. Tap the accordion menu button, i.e., the three horizontal lines at the top-left corner and enter the Drafts folder.

5. Look for the email you saved earlier and click on it. You'll observe that the link is now live (displayed in blue and underlined).

6. Type the anchor text inside the live link. Then, delete all other blue underlined characters except the anchor text.

7. Congrats! You have successfully added a hyperlink to the message, albeit in an indirect way.

Conclusion

Knowing how to send a web page link in an email is a valuable skill that helps you communicate effectively. We’ve explained the steps to do that on the three most popular email clients: Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Outlook. You've also learned how to send a link in an email on the Gmail app, which is not as straightforward as in a web client. With our tips, you should no longer face issues when inserting hyperlinks in your emails.
