From nature walks and cleanup efforts to parties for the planet, there are many events happening around Metro Vancouver to honour this blue-and-green ball of stardust we all call home.

Many of the events are planned for the weekend before or after April 22, so mark your calendars.

1. Party for the Planet in Surrey

When: April 27, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: City Hall Plaza, 13450-104th Ave., Surrey

Likely one of the largest celebrations in Metro Vancouver, Surrey hosts its annual Earth Day party on April 27 this year. It’s a free event for all ages. Activities include food trucks, environmental education, a sustainable marketplace, live music, dance performances, Indigenous cultural sharing and kids activities.

2. Nature walk in Port Moody

When: April 21, from 12:45 to 3:30 p.m.
Where: Rocky Point Park, 2800 Murray St., Port Moody
Cost: Free

Earth Day 2024: Here are 13 things to do in Metro Vancouver (4)

The Wondrous Tree Fellowship’s Earth Day Tree Walk includes a guided tree and nature walk to learn about the wonders of native species in the Tri-Cities. There will be a short forest meditation to reflect on the healing power of nature, crafts and seed planting for kids, and a museum-quality tree display. Music starts at 12:45 p.m. and the walk leaves at 1:30 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to join in this free and inclusive nature-based event. Event runs rain or shine.

3. Earth Day at Moodyville Park in North Vancouver

When: April 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Moodyville Park, 759 E. 3rd St., North Vancouver
Cost: Free

If you would rather mark the day by contributing to an environmental effort, consider Earth Day at Moodyville Park where you can help rid the park of invasive plants. Everyone can join in the invasive plant pull, or visit educational booths.

4. Land, Sea, Sky Earth Day in Vancouver

When: April 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: H.R. MacMillan Space Centre at 1100 Chestnut St., the Museum of Vancouver at 1100 Chestnut St. and the Vancouver Maritime Museum at 1905 Ogden Ave.
Cost: Admission to the MOV and the VMM are by donation. The Space Centre will charge their regular fees but will feature free Earth Day crafts and presentations.

5. Earth Day in Stanley Park

When: April 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Stanley Park Ecology Society
Cost: Free

Earth Day 2024: Here are 13 things to do in Metro Vancouver (8)

The Stanley Park Ecology Society hosts an Earth Day EcoStewards event, which includes an art workshop. Eco-artist Joshua Ralph will be teaching how to turn ever-abundant English Ivy into soap and create invasive species ink-based mono prints from the leaves. You’ll gain hands-on experience in stewarding Stanley Park as you help remove invasive English ivy from the forest before turning it into soap in the second half of the session.

To attend EcoStewards you must register online before the event. There will be a sign-in sheet on the morning of the event.

6. Richmond Earth Week

When: April 20-28
Where: Various locations in Richmond
Cost: Varies from free to low-cost

Earth Day 2024: Here are 13 things to do in Metro Vancouver (9)

Learn about the importance of bees as pollinators or go on a nature walk. The City of Richmond is hosting its annual Earth Week celebrations for families to engage in sustainable environmental practices, learn about nature and local ecology, and beautify the community. The week’s events feature an invasive plant pull, children’s activities, and several community workshops and educational sessions.

7. Kids Plant & Play at Glow Gardens in Langley

When: April 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Where: Glow Garden Centre, 6690 216th St., Langley
Cost: Register by purchasing a pass for $12 for your first child. Each additional child is $5

Kids are provided with a pot, soil and a selection of flowers, and are encouraged to plant them in any way they like. The event also includes the Glow Train offering guided greenhouse tours, offering kids a chance to see behind the scenes how flowers are grown.

8. Maple Ridge Earth Day

When: April 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Memorial Peace Park, 224th St., Maple Ridge

The Roots’ theme also celebrates the Indigenous history of the area and special events in 2024, including the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of Maple Ridge as a township.

9. Pollinator Party in New Westminster

When: April 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Fraser River Discovery Centre, 788 Quayside Dr., New Westminster
Cost: Included in admission to the Discovery Centre. Admission rates range from $5 for children to $8 for adults or $20 for a family pass. Kids under two are free

Earth Day 2024: Here are 13 things to do in Metro Vancouver (12)

If you want to know what all the buzz is about then consider heading to the Fraser River Discovery Centre’s Pollinator Party. The centre will be celebrating the important work that pollinators do to help keep the Fraser watershed fertilized, nourished and thriving. Kids can decorate a mini-pollinator pond to take home.

10. Earth Fest in South Vancouver

When: April 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Champlain Heights Community Centre, 3350 Maquinna Dr.

The Champlain Heights Community Centre hosts an Earth Day event in South Vancouver. Earth Fest is an annual community event and spring celebration based in Everett Crowley Park. Join the Everett Crowley Park Committee for fun at sustainability themed booths and family friendly activities. The entertainment and activities are free, and wheelchair accessible.

11. River cleanup in Chilliwack

When: April 20, 8:30 a.m. (registration opens) to 1:30 p.m.
Where: 48600 Chilliwack Lake Rd.
Cost: Free

Earth Day 2024: Here are 13 things to do in Metro Vancouver (14)

Join the Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Society for the annual river cleanup. Registration is open at Thompson Regional Park from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and they will supply garbage bags, gloves and pickup sticks. If you pre-register by email you will receive an additional raffle ticket for prizes.

12. Stanley Park nature walk with Ross Reid

When: April 21 at 1:15 p.m. (refreshments served at 4 p.m.)

Take a two-hour walk through Stanley Park and learn about environmental issues with Ross Reid from Nerdy About Nature. His Instagram account @NerdyAboutNature provides education and inspires people to engage with the outdoors. The walk will be followed by drinks and snacks at the Stanley Park Brewpub.
