You can use pure, natural beeswax to create soft and smooth homemade beeswax lip balms for yourself if you have chapped lips or dry lips (or if you enjoy high quality, natural chap sticks!).
You can feel good knowing exactly what is in your product.
Plus, a beeswax lip balm is typically made with only three ingredients:
- Real beeswax
- A carrier oil
- An organic essential oil
The Benefits Of Beeswax
Beeswax has several benefits when used in homemade lip balms and natural products:
- Moisturizing: Beeswax is a natural emollient, which means it helps to moisturize and hydrate the skin. It is the perfect ingredient in lip balms.
- Healing: Beeswax has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, making it useful for healing minor skin irritations and wounds.
- Protective: Beeswax forms a protective barrier on the skin, helping to lock in moisture and protect the skin from environmental irritants.
- Soothing: Beeswax is rich in Vitamin A, which is known for its soothing and softening properties for the skin and lips.
- Long lasting: Beeswax can help to extend the shelf life of natural products by acting as a natural preservative.
- Natural and Sustainable: Beeswax is a natural, sustainable ingredient that is produced by bees, making it a great alternative to synthetic ingredients in personal care products.
These above statements are all true if you are able to find 100% pure, natural beeswax.
But how do you know if the beeswax you are buying is pure??
How To Find Real, Pure Beeswax
Pure beeswax will have a sweet honey smell and will be very high quality.
In order to find this true beeswax, you should first know:
- where it is coming from (the location)
- who is selling it (is it direct from a farmer or beekeepers)
- and if it is pure
You do not want to buy a beeswax product that has been mixed with another type of wax, or one that has been bleached or who knows what else. Many commercial sellers will blend their beeswax with other waxes so they have a higher quantity to sell to make a bigger profit.
When you can find a beekeeper and purchase your beeswax directly from the source, you are getting the real deal.
We have listed several beekeepers online who sell directly from their own beekeeping operation.
These are small farming operations, many of them are beekeeping families, so purchasing from them will not only ensure a pure, beautiful beeswax, but it will also support small farmers who continue to make high quality products in a world of quantity-over-quality commercial products.

Carrier Oils
A good homemade beeswax lip balm recipe will have beeswax in it, as well as a carrier oil, which you have the choice of.
Some of the usual carrier oils include:
- coconut oil
- almond oils
- olive oil
- avocado oil
- jojoba oil
- sunflower oil
- shea butter
- cocoa butter
- vitamin E oil
You can also add essential oils or a flavoring oil, which are great for adding fragrance, but these are not considered a carrier oil. We will talk about essential oils and flavor oil further in the article!
If you are not sure which carrier oils(s) you would like to use in your DIY beeswax lip balm recipe, we will tell you about the first three choices, which are our personal favorites: coconut oils, almond oils and olive oils.
Coconut Oil
Coconut is a popular carrier oil for a homemade beeswax lip balm because it has several beneficial properties for the skin and lips!
Some of the reasons for using coconut oil in homemade lip balms include its moisturizing properties, its antimicrobial properties, and it is a natural and a sustainable oil.
Coconut is a top choice ingredient, but you will want to make sure you look for some specifics if you are using this in your homemade skincare products.
Here are some things to consider when selecting a coconut oil for diy skincare products:
- Virgin or Extra-Virgin: Look for one that is labeled as "virgin" or "extra-virgin." These oils are made from fresh, mature coconuts and are less likely to be refined or processed, which means they hang on to more of their natural beneficial properties.
- Cold-pressed: Cold-pressed coconut oils are produced using a mechanical process that doesn't involve heat, which can damage the oil's natural properties. Cold-pressed is considered to be of higher quality than other types of coconut oils.
- Organic: Look for one that is certified organic. This ensures that the oil is free from pesticides and other harmful chemicals.
- Transparency: Look for a brand that is transparent about its sourcing and production methods. This can help to ensure that it is of high quality and ethically produced.
- Avoid fractionated coconut oil: Fractionated oil is highly processed and has had its long-chain fatty acids removed, which can reduce its beneficial properties for the skin.
Note: Keep in mind that some people may be allergic to coconut oil, so it's always a good idea to do a patch test on your own skin.

Almond Oil
Almond oil, or sweet almond oil, is another popular carrier oil for your natural lip balm recipe. This is due to its moisturizing properties, this is rich in Vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that helps to protect the skin from environmental damage and can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
It's also lightweight and easily absorbed by the skin, making it a good choice for homemade lip balms because it won't leave a heavy or greasy feeling on the lips.
Just be aware if you or someone you are making this for has a nut allergy!
What is the difference between almond and sweet almond oil?
The main difference between almond oil and sweet almond oil is in how they are processed.
Almond oil is typically made from the dried kernels of the almond tree and is extracted using heat and solvents. This results in a neutral-tasting, odorless oil that is high in monounsaturated fatty acids
Sweet almond oil, on the other hand, is made from the edible kernels of the almond tree, which are first blanched to remove the outer skin, then cold-pressed to extract the oil.
This results in a light-tasting, mild-smelling oil that is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids and vitamins, making it a popular choice for use in cosmetics and personal care products.
This is considered higher quality than almond oil, which is why we are recommending it over regular almond oil for your handmade products.

Olive Oil
Here is another fantastic choice of carrier oils for your lip balms, is moisturizing and rich in antioxidants such as vitamin E and polyphenols (which are so good for you according to the national Library of Medicine (read their abstract about polyphenols).
Oil made from olives is a natural, plant-based option that is readily available and easy to use, making it a sustainable choice for DIY natural lip balm.
Extra-virgin is considered the best option for skincare as it is cold-pressed and has the highest levels of antioxidants and beneficial compounds.

Essential Oils
You can also include essential oils in this homemade lip balm recipe. Just be sure to use a pure essential oil that is cosmetic grade and organic. Now remember, an essential oil typically will only add scent (except for the case of mint or other oils where you will also have a bit of a taste).
We recommend this brand of pure, organic essential oils from Amazon. It is the brand we have used for years in our cold process soap and every other diy bath and body product we make, and we highly recommend them.
Flavor Oils
Alternatively, you can swap your organic essential oils for something with a bit of flavor if you want to taste your homemade beeswax lip balm.
There are flavor oils you can use which include flavors like cake batter, cotton candy, or more wonderful concentrated individual flavors.
You can also get a multi pack of flavors to mix or experiment with.
Now that you know a bit more about all of the ingredients, let's start making homemade beeswax lip balm!
Here is the best, basic beeswax, natural lip balm recipe. This recipe makes between 7-10 lip balm tubes (depending on their size).
Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm Ingredients:
- 1/8 cup grated beeswax or beeswax pastilles
- 1/8 cup carrier oil
- Optional: 10 - 20 drops of your favorite essential oil or flavor oil for fragrance or flavoring
Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm Tools
- A glass measuring cup
- Chapstick tubes or tins (if choosing the tubes, make sure they are the push up tubes)
- A wax melter (optional, but very handy) or a double boiler
Ok, let's make lip balm!
Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm Instructions:
In a double boiler or a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, melt the beeswax and carrier oil together on medium low heat.
You can melt your mixture with a wax melter, which are amazing if you plan on melting more wax for beeswax wraps or candles.
- Once the beeswax and oil are completely melted, remove the mixture from heat.
- If desired, add a few drops of essential oil for fragrance or flavoring at this point, and stir until blended.
- Carefully pour the melted mixture into lip balm tubes or small tins with a measuring cup that has a defined pour spout.
- Allow the homemade lip balm to cool completely and solidify.
- Once cooled and solidified, cap the tubes or tins, and your natural lip balm is ready to use!
Feel free to play with the ingredients and make the recipe a little more DIY.
Perhaps you want a softer lip balm, in which case you would add a bit less beeswax and some more softer oils.
Trust me, you will want to create these all the time now!
Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm Tubes and Lip Balm Tins (Lip Balm Containers)
When it comes to packaging your lip balms, there are some really great choices out there, depending on if you want your own lip balm in a tube or in lip balm tins.
