Oranges are truly one of the most versatile fruits, and can be integral parts of recipes ranging from fruity desserts to citrusy dinners, with drinks and healthy snacks in between. When we talk about “oranges”, what do we really mean? There are upwards of 300 types of oranges out there, so it isn’t as simple as just grabbing any old orange-hued fruit. The most readily available option is called a navel orange, and, like the ubiquitous red delicious apple, they’re really not that tasty for eating or juicing. Looking for juice? Go for a tangerine or a Valencia orange, which tend to be sweeter and juicier. Want an orange for snacking on? Try a mandarin, clementine, or a Cara Cara orange. Looking for something a little outside the box? Try a blood orange or a Tangelo (like a cross between a tangerine and a pomelo, which is kind of like an overly large grapefruit). Clearly there are LOTS of options, so use these pointers to get started, and then get creative with whichever kinds you can find.

Now you’ve got your oranges in hand, what should you make with them? You could make something classically sweet, like our citrus upside-down cake, ambrosia salad, or orange marmalade.
