Psychology
The psychology department will graduate their first Youth Leadership Development major this year (Phillip Crawshaw). Lee Griffith is the director of the complementary major.
Lee Griffith, Bill Farmen and Linda Swindell worked together to plan and initiate the refurbishing of our rat lab into a computer-based lab for our biopsychology and cognitive
courses. It is nearing completion.
Wayne Priest attended an ethics conference in February in Muncie. He has been asked to speak on sexuality to the residents of a women’s dorm at Huntington University.
Wayne Priest and Lee Griffith spoke at a premarital seminar held on the AU campus in March.
Linda Swindell spoke to a women’s group at her church regarding balancing a family and professional life.
Religious Studies
We have educated hundreds of students through courses in the liberal arts curriculum as well as through departmental majors.
We are graduating some 30-40 majors.
Professors Berky, Kirkpatrick, Shively, and Spaulding have made various presentations for groups at Park Place Church of God.
Dr. Marian Berky directed the Peace and Conflict Transformation (PACT) program.
Dr. Fred Shively facilitated multiple student internships and continued to see the Anderson University Center for Ministry Education (AUCME), which sent out multiple ministry teams and hosted the annual Missions Fair. In addition, a Youth Ministry Symposium is being envisioned for next spring.
Dr. Merle Strege published the revised and enlarged edition of John W. V. Smith’s The Quest for Holiness and Unity.
Drs. Overstreet, Shively, and Strege have worked with the School of Adult Learning to design courses and majors.
Along with Campus Pastor, Todd Faulkner, Drs. Overstreet and Shively have discussed further the incorporation of the Sustaining Health and Pastoral Excellence (SHAPE) initiative into the Christian Ministries and Youth Ministries majors.

Ten Dramatic Performances as Henry David Thoreau
In the fall of 2009, it was my great honor to be engaged to offer my dramatic portrayal of Thoreau for an event entitled “John Brown and New England,” an event held in Massachusetts to recognize John Brown’s connection to the New England abolitionist movement and to recognize the 150th anniversary of his actions at Harpers Ferry. My performances in Concord and Worcester took place on the 150th anniversary dates of when Thoreau first delivered his “A Plea for Captain John Brown” and the event in Worcester on November 3 took place in the same location using the same podium that Thoreau used.

Dr. Becky Hull began serving as President of the Midwest District of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) in March 2010. She also serves on the AAHPERD Structure and Functions Committee. She was Co-Chair of the one of the Local Arrangements Committees (Room Monitors) overseeing 80 volunteers who helped host
the national AAHPERD Convention in Indianapolis March 2010.
Connie Hippensteel attended the ACSM meeting in Atlanta. She attended a Round Singing Retreat at The Lama Retreat in New Mexico and one in San Francisco, California. She and Denise Kriebel initiated A Healthy U, an incentive program for regular exercise. AU partnered with the Mental Health Center of Anderson to establish a community garden.
The AU Sports Med Program has sponsored two successful blood drives with the American Red Cross. Mandy Bush was the AU lead person.
Fred Miller and Doug Seelbach have won a Faculty Development grant to improve classroom instruction in Exercise Science using video clips illustrating assessment and protocol techniques in exercise testing.
Jennifer Popp, Steve Risinger, and Connie Hippensteel won an FDC grant to host a training day for ensuring Safety in the Weight Training Exercises and Techniques. Specialists from St. Vincent’s Sports Medicine Program lead a day long seminar for coaches and DOK faculty in January 2010.
Paul Gray hosted the Very Special Arts Festival in March 2010 at the KWC. Over 300 children/adults from the Anderson community participated in sessions in art, music and movement. This is an annual event partnering with Special Olympics.
Dr. Fred Miller ran the Disney Marathon and finished in the top 10% for his age group. He will be running the Cincinnati Marathon in May.
Dr. Jim Scott has been offering a CPR class for AU faculty/staff in the evenings.

Created and received approval for a new course, Thought Life and Spiritual Growth, which will be offered regularly beginning next academic year. The objectives of this new course are:
- Students will be able to recognize basic constructs of cognitive theory and cognitive theory techniques.
- Students will operate within a framework of the self based on Judeo-Christian spiritual principles for class role plays and assignments.
- Students will display knowledge of the convergence of cognitive theory with Christian precepts of self.
- Students will actualize a cognitive/spiritual process that can be applied personally and professionally to discern and respond to thoughts and emotions.

Serves as liaison and coordinates the field trips to the Chicago Center for students from our Social Problems’ classes and the visits by representatives each semester. Lolly also coordinates visits made by Chicago Center representatives to our campus.

Social Work students:
Planned and presented a conference for local social service practitioners entitled, “The Latest High: Addictions in a Modern Society”.
Provided four (3.5) Continuing Education Units approved by the Indiana Chapter, National Association of Social Workers for the above conference.
Social work seniors will be traveling to New Orleans, LA for a service project in April, 2010.

Has authored and distributed weekly campus “Enviro-note” to faculty and staff via e-mail for the past four years.

Has continued to be active in community service in several different capacities this past year.

Served as a member of the Grants Review Committee of Chemical People Task Force of Madison County (CPTF). This local coordinating committee has served valuable functions for our county and local community in the efforts to address issues and problems related to Alcohol, Tobacco and Substance Abuse and is a model of such committees statewide.
Has continued to serve and Chair and a member of the university Curriculum Committee. This year was particularly busy for the committee, given the changes made for the new 2010-12 Academic Catalog.
Served once again this year as a member and Chair of the Nominations Committee, charged with developing the slate for Faculty elections to Standing Committees.
Volunteered and serving as a member of an Advisory Working Group regarding increasing diversity at AU under the leadership of Dean Morris
Has been hired as a consultant to carry out the Evaluation component to the local Anderson “Weed and Seed” project which is funded by a 5-year grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. Dr. Mac Murray will be involved with this ongoing evaluation effort for the next three years, through the completion of the grant funding cycle ending in September 2012 and the submission of the final report on this grant project.
Dr. D. Maria Scott
As a result of her research on Latino businesses in central Indiana, Dr. Scott has produced two academic journal papers:
“Socio/Economic Ethnic Entrepreneurship Development Theories: An Analysis of Hispanic Business Enterprises in Central Indiana.” Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences, XIV, 2010.
“Theoretical Explanations of the Success of Hispanic Business Enterprises (HBEs) in Indianapolis: Ethnic Resources, Market Orientation, Market Exchange Embeddedness,” (Under Review, International Business Review).
Dr. Scott’s interest in the integration of immigrant populations into the United States has also led her to study and conduct research on the integration of her own ethnic group, Portuguese Americans. Based on data provided by the United States Census, the American Community Surveys and the Yearbook of Immigrant Statistics, Dr. Scott has written and published papers in Portuguese journals related to this topic:. The first of these papers (in English) is already in print in a journal that is read throughout Europe.

As a result of producing these papers, Dr. Scott was invited to conduct a presentation at the University of the Azores, Portugal in March 2009. During her stay in the Azores, Maria conducted a public lecture on Portuguese American integration, taught a Master’s level seminar on immigration theory and policy, and was the guest on a one-hour television program dedicated to the topic of the integration of Portuguese immigrants and their descendents in American society.
Dr. Scott’s interest in studying the integration of the descendents of Portuguese immigrants in the United States and Canada has led her to create and administer an online survey, which, to date, has been filled out by over 1100 participants. She has been asked by several Portuguese and Canadian American newspapers to write news articles presenting the results of this survey. She has applied for a summer faculty development grant in order to extend the survey to individuals who are not connected to online sites and to conduct in-depth interviews with selected persons in communities with a high concentration of Portuguese American. She intends to write academic
papers and a book on this topic during her sabbatical leave. As a result of this research effort, Dr Scott has been asked to establish a research partnership with the Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies at RI College and she has also been asked to become officially affiliated as a researcher with the National Organization of Portuguese Americans (NOPA) based in Washington, D.C. Both organizations have offered with to help identify funding sources for her research.
Dr. Scott was a founding member and has continued to be affiliated with the Indiana Diversity Women’s Network (IDWN), serving as this group’s secretary. In conjunction with activities from this group, Maria has conducted in-depth interviews with immigrant women from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, who have settled in Indiana. She received a faculty development grant and a small Indiana Humanities Council grant for this purpose. She is still
working on a text that will include the stories of the women she interviewed.
